Brad Colbow's Tumblr: It's Not File Size That's Killing iPad Magazines -

Recent SHONEN JUMP across the planet would have probably aware that their weekly dose of scanlation is probably coming to an end. One word: Vizmedia.
As they (Vizmedia) has launched their simultaneous digital publication for major JUMP series, they have demanded (big and notable?) scanlation site to cease hosting those series. I believe in the hope to drive the fans to buy their digital product.
While the plan seem to be logical, I don’t think it will work as much. Probably they’ll get some percentage of North American fans to buy their digital product. But that will leave the rest of JUMP’s fans untouched.
It goes back to the common believe that the rest of the fans was never in the capacity to buy the product. Either it was mis-priced of mis-packaged. VizMedia won’t get hurt so much from this. What will truly getting the impact is the merchandiing industry of JUMP’s character. The lesser people know Luffy, Sasuke or Orihime, the less chance they’ll know other characters. The lesser likely they are going to buy figma or scale figure.
Good Smile company, Max factory and other manufacturer and distributor probably will receive the long term effect.
Yeah, I just want some “free” scanlation. If Google Adsense can pay you better than my pocket, why would you want my pennies?
